Ekoskola visit Verdala Palace

As part of the Siggiewi Heritage Trail, on Saturday 2nd March, the EKoSkola committee, visited the Verdala Palace in Buskett.  The palace forms part of Siggiewi.

Before entering the palace, the Siggiewi Community Police, gave us a brief talk about their duties and presented us with small gifts.

The curator of the palace gave us some information about it.  The palace was built by the Grandmaster Verdala in 1586.  The palace now serves as the summer residence of the President of Malta.

We entered the main hall where beautiful frescoes decorate the ceilings.

We saw the secret passages where the Grandmaster could hide when attacked by the enemies. The thing I liked most was the grand spiral staircase that led from the basement to the second main hall.  An interesting fact was that each step was built low so the knights will find it easy to climb up and down the stairs with their armour.

At the end, one of the children asked if it’s true that the blue lady’s ghost is seen.  The curator replied that they say that she was seen although he never saw it.

This was the most interesting and memorable outing I attended as I felt like a knight going back through the years.
