Language Awareness Week

This week is about celebrating language awareness among our students. During this week we held four special assemblies about four different European languages which are widely spoken around the world. These interesting and engaging presentations were prepared by:

Year 6.1, Italian – The Italian language is reported to be spoken in a record 26 countries in the world. It’s the official language of the Vatican City, San Marino and Switzerland. It’s also considered the second or third foreign language spoken in Corsica, Monaco and Albania.

Year 6.2, French – Formally, 29 countries use French as the national or official language, placing it in the second place after English. French is the international language of cooking, fashion, theatre, the visual arts, dance and architecture.

Year 6.3, Spanish – The Spanish language spans four continents, as the official language of 21 countries. With close to 500 million native speakers as of 2022, Spanish is the 2nd most-spoken language in the world after Mandarin Chinese.

Year 6.4 German – Around 130 million people worldwide speak German as their mother tongue. German is the most widely spoken mother language and an official language in four countries in the European Union: Germany, Austria, Belgium and Luxembourg. German is also an official language in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Moreover, around 7.5 million people in 42 countries worldwide belong to a German-speaking minority.

These language awareness assemblies help contribute to the development of students’ thinking skills within the foreign languages.
