Using Artificial Intelligence during a STEM Project:

In our recent class activity, we delved into the fascinating world of materials, sparking curiosity among the students about their properties and potential applications. Venturing further, we harnessed the power of artificial intelligence to engage in a riveting conversation with the renowned inventor Margaret Knight. Through the innovative tool Character.ai, the children eagerly posed insightful questions about her groundbreaking invention—a machine capable of folding and gluing paper bags, revolutionizing packaging as we know it. Inspired by Knight’s ingenuity, the students embarked on a hands-on journey to design and craft their own bags, a task requiring careful consideration of size and durability to accommodate specific items. This immersive experience not only nurtured a deeper understanding of materials and invention but also cultivated critical thinking and innovation skills, empowering the students to explore and innovate in their own right.

Examples of the emergent curriculum in action:

Year 6.2 Using Virtual Reality in the Classroom

The introductory lesson to the Social Studies topic “In the Mediterranean Sea” was delivered through a VR session.   The lesson was introduced by looking closely at a map of the world.  Then the continents’ position on the world map, their size and countries were discussed. Following this, the children used the VR to carry out a virtual visit to different countries and places of interest within these continents.  We visited different places such as Tanzania, Kilimanjaro, Finland, Brussels, Australia, Antarctica and Japan. The children enjoyed the lovely views of Africa from inside a hot air balloon and the fun jumps of penguins in Antarctica. They also had a close look at the EU’s parliament building in Brussels, America’s Central Park, a close look at a 3D model of the Statue of Liberty and the calm atmosphere next to the cherry blossom trees in Japan. Throughout the VR session, the children also took note of what they saw and what they liked and did not like. Needless to say, they had a whale of a time. This activity also helped students to visualize and consolidate topics covered in both English and Science, such as how climate affects our habitats; the type of materials used to build houses as well as native vegetation.

Year 6.3 students writing and performing poetry

During the first English literature lesson, the students of Year 6.3 listened to and read Michael Rosen’s nonsense poem titled, ‘I was born in the Stone Age’. They then learnt about ‘nonsense poetry’, how it can be written and how it can be performed in front of an audience. At the end, they came up with their very own nonsense poems. The poems showcased the children’s wide imagination and their abilities to think outside the box. This goes to show that writing and performing poetry is fun!

A Birthday Party

Year 1.1 and K2.1 classes had a wonderful learning experience while preparing for the birthday party for Mr Teddy and Żigu and Ċika. By working together and planning the party, the students had the opportunity to apply and reinforce various skills, including maths, writing, creativity, perception, conversation, sequencing, counting, socialization, and hygiene. The hands-on approach of preparing for a party provided an engaging and fun way for the students to learn and practice these skills. It’s great to see how the students were able to incorporate various themes into their learning, including food, birthdays, and parties, while also learning important lessons about respect and socialization.
