In October, our school actively participates in Dyslexia Awareness Month by organizing various activities to promote awareness and emphasize the importance of building strong self-esteem in children from an early age. Beginning in kindergarten, we focus on nurturing their self-confidence.
The children in KG 1 created vibrant banners adorned with empowering messages such as “We are nice,” “We are beautiful,” and “We are happy.” Meanwhile, KG 2 and Year 1 students made handprints, which were fashioned into wings, symbolizing the idea of spreading one’s wings and flying.
Year 2 students engaged in lessons to discover their “spark,” emphasizing the importance of finding and pursuing their passions. They curated photos showcasing activities they excel at or are in the process of mastering. Year 3 students collaborated to construct a “kindness flower,” where each petal represented an act of kindness, fostering a sense of empathy and compassion.
In Year 4, students delved into researching dyslexia, creating informative posters to raise awareness about the learning disorder. Year 5 students read “Thank You, Mr. Falker,” a book by Patricia Polacco, a dyslexic author. Inspired by the story, they wrote thank-you notes to individuals who had supported and helped them. A presentation on celebrating diversity was organized by a Year 5 class, emphasizing the beauty and uniqueness inherent in our differences and highlighting how special each individual is.
Year 6 students watched the film “Mical,” which depicts the struggles of a dyslexic boy in school and his eventual success with the help of his mother. Following the viewing, they wrote book reviews, discussed their favourite characters, and explored the emotions shared by the author. A Year 6 class conducted an assembly where they provided insights into dyslexia, highlighting the challenges faced by learners with dyslexia and outlining the school’s strategies to support these individuals.
