You can write letters/numbers or shapes in playdough using either small pebbles, or coins, or buttons etc.

Letter Formation

Practice forming letters (in Maltese) with playdough by printing these mats. After printing the mats cover them in plastic in order to use them more than once.

Important: Remind the children to start putting the dough from where the arrow is, so that they can practise letter formation correctly.

You can print these letters by using this pdf link: Acrobat Document letters

Finally, let the children play freely with the playdough so they use their imagination to create things.

Kindergarten Activity No 30 – Words that Rhyme

Words that rhyme

Find the odd one out

Aim: This phonological awareness activity will help the children understand the concept of rhyme. This is an auditory activity and the emphasis must be placed on listening. (It is important not the show the written word to your child). This rhyming game can be played in both Maltese and English.

For this game you will need:

  • Rhyming cards. If you do not have a pack of rhyming cards you can make your own. Cut out various pictures of objects from magazines, old books or you can find them online. Make sure you choose pictures of words that rhyme.
  • A magnetic cross (If you don’t have one you can make your own from coloured cardboard).

Put three rhyming cards on a table; two picture cards of words that rhyme and a picture card of a word that doesn’t.  e.g.  dog     bee    frog.  Your child must guess which are the two words that rhyme.

Ask the child to tell you the names of the objects on each picture.

Repeat the names of the objects making a stress on the end sounds.

Encourage your child to listen carefully.

Ask your child: Which words rhyme? (the rhyming words are the words that end with the same sound – dog and frog). Which word doesn’t? (bee).

Ask your child to put the cross on the word which does not rhyme with the other words.

Repeat using different pictures.

Alternative

To make the learning more concrete, you can use real objects instead of pictures.

For this game you will need:

  • Various rhyming objects.
  • A basket.

  1. Line three objects, two objects that sound the same, and one that doesn’t, on the floor or on a table.
  2. Ask your child to say the name of the objects (e.g. cat, hat, bag).
  3. Repeat the name of the objects, making an emphasis on the end sound.

Your child must pair the two rhyming objects and put the one that doesn’t rhyme (the odd one out) in the basket.

Repeat with different objects.

This game can be played in both Maltese and English.

Kindergarten Activity No 29 – Sequencing

Sequencing is a very important skill. Some children find sequencing a difficult concept to understand.

Attached please find two different stories and two packs of cards, to print. Hereunder are the instructions on how to practice two sequencing activities, using the stories and the cards, with your child. You can choose which story you want for each activity. To print the cards you may use this pdf file: sequencing

Activity 1: Sequencing a story

1. Print the cards and ask your child to arrange them in the correct sequence to create a story from beginning to end.

2. When your child thinks s/he has put the cards in the correct sequence, ask him/her to tell you the story, in his own words, using the pictures.

3. Then tell the story to your child and check the sequence. If the sequence was not correct arrange it according to the story.

4. Tell your child the story again.

5. Encourage your child to tell you the story once again.

Activity 2: Memory play

1. Start by telling the story to your child.

2. Then give him/her the cards and encourage him/her to arrange them in the correct sequential order.

The yellow kite

Once there was a boy who was happily flying his yellow kite in the park. Unfortunately, his kite got stuck into a tree. He was very sad. A kind officer, who happened to be passing by, brought a ladder and got the kite for the boy. The boy was very happy to have his kite back.

The boy who got dirty

A boy was upset because his t-shirt got dirty. He decided to wash it in the washing machine. He waited patiently for the washing machine to finish. After some time, it was ready. The boy was very happy to wear the clean t-shirt.
