Our school has participated in this year’s X’hemM? activities, through our Kindergarten 2 classes. The theme for this year was “X’hemM? għal Kulħadd”. So on Wednesday 15th March, all KG2 students became scientists and participated in STEM activities according to the topic they are currently working on. Below is an overview of what was been going on……

L-attivita’ tagħna għal din l-inizjattiva kienet waqt proġett fejn l-interess tat-tfal kien dwar in-nar (ara stampa 1). Waqt din l-attivita’ bnejna flimkien nar artifiċjali.
- Bdejna billi żbajna borża biż-żebgħa ħamra (ara stampa 2)
- Ħejjejna l-affarijiet li għandna bżonn (ara stampa 3)
- Waħħalna l-borża mal-fan heater bit-tejp (ara stampa 4)
- Xegħelna il-fan heater u rajna l-borża tintefaħ (ara stampa 5)
- Indunajna li biex il-borża tibda tperper rridu naqtugħa (ara stampa 6)
- Komplejna nesperimentaw sakemm ġibna l-qies it-tajjeb (ara stampa 7)
- Daħħalna bozza tal-batterija fin-nofs (ara stampa 8)
- Ikkonkludejna permezz ta’ diskussjoni dwar l-esperiment innifsu u x’jiġri f’każ li qiegħdin nagħmlu esperiment bħal dan fejn qed nużaw l-elettriku u l-batterija fuq barra u tibda’ nieżla x-xita. Għaldaqstant esplorajna metodi oħra ta’ kif nistgħu nagħmlu riħ minflok nużaw il-‘fan heater’. Rajna wkoll x’relazzjoni hemm bejn id-direzzjoni tan-nar u d-direzzjoni minn fejn ġej ir-riħ.

KG 2.2
Our class topic is Paris, so for this activity the children were challenged to created their own Eiffel Tower using everyday objects such as straws and lollipop sticks. The children worked together to create their structures and were very satisfied with their results.
Ms Jessica Farrugia Kinder 2.2

KG 2.3
Our class topic is “Space” so we did a science experiment; A balloon rocket experiment. First, I explained step by step what we were going to do. Then when everything was ready, I asked the children which way they thought the rocket balloon would travel. Most of them showed good prediction skills and they loved this experiment and asked me to do more experiments like this in the future.

KG 2.4
During our topic Dinosaurs, children showed interest and mentioned volcanoes lots of times, therefore we decided to carry out an experiment and do a volcano. We enjoyed doing this fun and exciting activity and it was a perfect activity which helped the children understand that when you mix certain materials together, it causes chemical reactions. During this activity children were asked to make predictions of what they think will happen.

Our Volcano experiment.
In this hands-on experiment, children learn about how ingredients are combined to create chemical reactions. It also facilitates discussion and sustained shared thinking. During this activity, the children practiced fine motor skills using the pipettes. They were very excited and asked several questions about materials used and about the real volcanoes.
Taking turns was encouraged throughout the activity and they all participated effectively. As a follow up activity, the children were asked to draw a volcano and I very satisfied with their outcome.

The children in our class were very interested in the process, and looked delighted with the result of this simple Optical Illusion craft, which was part of our project about fire safety and firefighters.
They first gave colour to their pictures and used their scissoring skills to cut around them.
Then, they each had a straw and an ice cream stick which they rolled in their hands in order to test which of the two is the easiest to spin. In a discussion, the children gave reasons as to why they all thought that the straw is better to spin.
Finally, we stuck both pictures back to back with a straw in between the papers. The children really enjoyed watching the two pictures turn into one in front of their eyes!
