Week starting 24th October 2022 was Dyslexia Awareness Week at our school. This year Dyslexia Awareness week was entitled ‘Understanding Dyslexia’. Various activities were held throughout the school to support understanding and awareness of Dyslexia.
Dyslexia comes with many challenges. Our aim is to help our children to grow up believing they can overcome these challenges. This can only be achieved if from a very young age, we help them grow up believing in themselves. During this week the teachers in the early years helped the children focus on their strengths and on how beautiful they are. The year 1 students designed banners with empowering words on them, while the students in year 2 focused on their strengths and created an ‘I can’ wall.
Through the use of a social story, the students in year 3 classes learnt about the barriers children with dyslexia face, and how we as a community can help to eliminate these barriers. We want our children to persevere and never give up. Thus, we believe that it is very important to provide dyslexics with success stories of famous people. After doing extensive research, the year 4 students designed famous dyslexics posters aimed at helping children understand that by facing challenges and overcoming fears we too can be successful.
To help improve understanding, the year 5 students designed fact sheets to be distributed to other classes. These fact sheets provide essential information about what dyslexia is and how to help children with dyslexia. The year 6 students had a chance to get creative. They designed the posters for Dyslexia Awareness Week. These posters were distributed in other classes.
Below you can see pictures of some of the children’s wonderful work.
