This year I learnt about the Financial Literacy Challenge where I needed to make an inexpensive, sustainable, local and healthy dish. With my parents’ help, I enjoy cooking at home, so I was immediately interested in participating. I wanted to make a fish dish as I know that fish is as nutritious as meat and chicken but with less fats. I went to the fish market to see what was available and the prices. For the competition, the prices were very important, so I decided to buy a kilo of bogue (vopi) which is currently in season, cheap and is sustainable as well. I also supplied certain ingredients from my own home. For example, I got the fresh herbs from our herb garden. With a total of €6.95, I managed to make a fish soup (aljotta), fried bogue with a side of potatoes with parsley and zucchini for four persons. Thanks to this challenge, I have learnt how to make sensible decisions when it comes to spending money on food. I was lucky enough to come in second place too!
