Kindergarten Activity No 30 – Words that Rhyme

Words that rhyme

Find the odd one out

Aim: This phonological awareness activity will help the children understand the concept of rhyme. This is an auditory activity and the emphasis must be placed on listening. (It is important not the show the written word to your child). This rhyming game can be played in both Maltese and English.

For this game you will need:

  • Rhyming cards. If you do not have a pack of rhyming cards you can make your own. Cut out various pictures of objects from magazines, old books or you can find them online. Make sure you choose pictures of words that rhyme.
  • A magnetic cross (If you don’t have one you can make your own from coloured cardboard).

Put three rhyming cards on a table; two picture cards of words that rhyme and a picture card of a word that doesn’t.  e.g.  dog     bee    frog.  Your child must guess which are the two words that rhyme.

Ask the child to tell you the names of the objects on each picture.

Repeat the names of the objects making a stress on the end sounds.

Encourage your child to listen carefully.

Ask your child: Which words rhyme? (the rhyming words are the words that end with the same sound – dog and frog). Which word doesn’t? (bee).

Ask your child to put the cross on the word which does not rhyme with the other words.

Repeat using different pictures.

Alternative

To make the learning more concrete, you can use real objects instead of pictures.

For this game you will need:

  • Various rhyming objects.
  • A basket.

  1. Line three objects, two objects that sound the same, and one that doesn’t, on the floor or on a table.
  2. Ask your child to say the name of the objects (e.g. cat, hat, bag).
  3. Repeat the name of the objects, making an emphasis on the end sound.

Your child must pair the two rhyming objects and put the one that doesn’t rhyme (the odd one out) in the basket.

Repeat with different objects.

This game can be played in both Maltese and English.
