The very act of working through a difficult problem to find a solution is in itself very rewarding. In fact last Wednesday’s 1hr-Maths Challenge activity was a success.
Children, from Kinder to year 6, were presented with fun, age appropriate challenges. The children were engaged and really enjoyed trying to solve the respective challenges. Enthusiasm and a positive mood prevailed in the classrooms.
Some of the activities were related to real life situations such as sorting, sharing, money and planning. Such activities help children understand the relationship between Maths and everyday life. Maths is not just another subject. It is somethings we deal with on an everyday basis. Other activities were purely numerical. Such activities help generate an enthusiasm for numeracy and master Mathematical concepts.
The activity had various aims related to it. Apart from the learning factor, we wanted to take away the pressure some children feel when working with numbers and thus help make Maths less scary. The feedback received from teachers and students alike was very positive indeed.
