Siġġiewi Primary, Practical Interventions

On Thursday 10th, Monday 14th and Tuesday 15th of April, 2014, the Home Economics Seminar Centre [HESC] staff in liaison with the senior management team of St. Ignatius College, Siġġiewi Primary School organised a theoretical session and a hands-on practical session for Year 6 pupils and their parents / guardians. This intervention aimed to help pupils and their parents / guardians  acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes which would enable them to make informed healthier food choices.
Prior to the facilitation of the sessions the pupils’ parents / guardians  were informed through a circular which included all details about this activitiy. On the day, the participants were first grouped in the pupils’ respective classroom and a short presentation emphasising personal hygiene and safety features was facilitated by HESC staff.   Following this, the participants  were then divided into two groups not exceeding sixteen individuals in each session for safety reasons.  The two groups alternated between a practical session and an interactive PowerPoint presentation.  The PowerPoint presentation highlighted key aspects to a healthier lifestyle namely healthy eating and exercise.  This was facilitated by HESC staff through an active learning pedagogy where participants  were actively engaged through questioning techniques, interactive sketches and discussion.   Prior to commencing the practical session, participants  wore the adequate attire: head gear and apron.  As the teacher explained to the participants how to proceed throughout the session, pupils and their parents / guardians  shared roles.  These roles included the practising of several skills such as weighing, chopping, peeling, boiling, baking, cleaning up, time management and table laying.
For this activity, a healthy pasta dish with fresh broad beans was prepared. Broad beans were used as these were in season thus highlighting sustainable issues. Following the practical session, all dishes and drinks were laid on the table and both a verbal self-evaluation and a peer to peer evaluation were carried out.
